On February 25, the 2022 National Video Conference on University Lab Safety, organized by the Ministry of Education, was held in Beijing. Accordingly, HZAU organized a parallel session at the Administration Building. Vice President Guo Gangqi, Director of the Publicity Department Zhang Jinzhou, and other members of the HZAU lab safety work group attended.

At the conference, several universities and education administrative departments in Beijing and Guangdong respectively delivered reports with regard to the themes of lab safety and life-cycle management of hazardous chemicals. Zhong Denghua, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, introduced the 2022 lab safety work, delivered the work inspection schedule and key tasks of universities in the near future. To prevent lab safety accidents, enough attention should be paid to the lab safety work, safety management responsibilities must be clarified, and safety management capabilities must be strengthened, he stressed.

After the video conference, Zhang Yue, minister of the HZAU Construction and Safety Department, introduced the general plan for the lab safety work of our university based on the main problems uncovered in the previous lab safety inspection.

Then, Guo pointed out that the key to lab safety work is the “five ensurances”. First, improving safety awareness to ensure that the safety work is effective and orderly; second, optimizing responsibility mechanism to ensure that the safety responsibility is detailed and clear; third, attaching importance to safety education to ensure that the safety access is well-informed; fourth, carrying out safety inspection to ensure that the safety management is standardized; fifth, removing safety risks to ensure that the rectification is targeted and timely.

Li Yinjia from the HZAU Construction and Safety Department also listed the violations of HZAU teaching and research bases, and made work arrangements for the environmental management of the bases in accordance with the newly released Campus Management Measures of HZAU.

For the environmental management of the bases, Guo proposed the following five requirements: firstly, the awareness of building a green campus needs to be fostered; secondly, the management responsibility needs to be clarified; thirdly, efforts should be made in the work of inspection and problem rectification; fourth, reward and punishment mechanism should be optimized and annual performance assessment should be conducted; fifth, maintenance of facilities should be carried out in practice.
